Shock Isolation Platforms

Ves Fulp

All equipment in the high voltage rooms, except the high voltage transformers and rectifier stack, was mounted on a shock isolation platform. Shocks were installed around the perimeter of the platform and were controlled by an automatic leveling servo system. I was informed by the designer that the shocks were the same as those used on the landing gear of a B-29 Super Fortress airplane from WWII.

A similar platform was installed under the modulator tanks and their associated control cabinets. The first time we had to empty the oil out of one modulator tank, the automatic leveling system couldn't handle the uneven load and the entire platform tilted about 10 degrees. A hurried redesign corrected this problem.
