Missile Site (MSR) Launch Area

LAUT

(Excerpt from Safeguard -- A Step Toward Peace, Huntsville Division, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers)

The LAUT (Launch Area Utility Tunnel) is constructed of corrugated pipe culvert material continuously welded at all seams and junctions. Reinforced concrete bond beams are provided at junctions with hardened structures, and the entire tunnel is earth covered. Cables are routed from the MSCB (Missile Site Control Building) through the LAUT to the launch area. Two reinforced concrete terminal structures, located in the launch area, are designed to provide a transition between the corrugated-steel LAUT and the shielded conduit and manholes located in the launch area. Access to the LAUT is provided through a blast hatch and ladder in the roof of each terminal structure.
